Want to cut a player from your team roster? How to finish it good

Organized sport often represents the various participants’ passion for the sport their involved in, so emotions can often get in the way of practical issues such as a player no longer forming part of your plans.
There are a naturally a number of different reasons why a certain player may be identified to be cut from your team roster and this is where you’ll need to exercise your boldness and practicality.

You may or may not be fond of the player you need to drop on a personal level, but the both of you will have to understand that ‘business’ is ‘business’ and, in this case, the needs of the team have to be put before the individual needs of each player. When the situation has gotten to the point when you actually have to cut a player completely from your roster, it means that you have exhausted all other options and there’s simply no space for them anymore. Either their performance has dropped to a level which is hindering the performance of the entire team and they have been under-performing for too long, or perhaps you have to make room for a better player to take their place, or any other reason.

Players understand the reasons why they might need to be cut off the roster and deep down each of them are subconsciously or consciously prepared for that day. When delivering the news however, you don’t want to break the player’s spirit and end things on a sour note. Tell them how you truly appreciate their contributions up to so far, but this is where the road ends for them and your team. Keep the personal door open to them and offer to advise them on their further career, wishing them everything of the best of course.
If it has to be done, there is simply no other way, so just be bold and do it kindly but decisively.
